Webcam Test for Windows 10 & 11

Check your webcam below. If no picture appears, these Windows steps solve most camera problems. This guide uses our free webcam test.

Press start and allow camera access.

Fix a webcam that is not working on Windows

  1. Privacy switch. Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. Turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera and Let desktop apps access your camera.
  2. Enable the device. Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras. If your camera is listed as disabled, select it and click Enable.
  3. Check for a camera key or shutter. Many laptops have an F-key or slider that disables the camera.
  4. Test the Camera app. Open the Windows Camera app. If it shows nothing, the issue is the driver or hardware.
  5. Reinstall the driver. Device Manager → Cameras (or Imaging devices). Right-click the camera → Uninstall device, then restart so Windows reinstalls it.
  6. Try a different USB port for external webcams, and avoid unpowered USB hubs.
  7. Update Windows, since camera drivers often arrive through Windows Update.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my webcam not show up in Device Manager?

It may be disabled in BIOS or by a hardware switch, or the cable or port is faulty. Try another USB port or a different computer to test.

Why is my webcam image black?

Another app has the camera, the lens cover is closed, or the driver is stuck. Close other apps, open the cover and restart.
