Webcam Test

Press start and allow camera access.

Camera not showing? Try these fixes

  • Allow access: click the padlock or camera icon next to the address bar and set Camera to Allow.
  • Close other apps: only one app can use the camera at a time. Quit Zoom, Teams, Skype or OBS first.
  • Check the privacy shutter: many laptops have a slider or keyboard key that blocks the lens.
  • Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, and turn on access for apps and your browser.
  • Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, and tick your browser.
  • Try another browser or restart your computer if the camera still does not appear.

How this webcam test works

The page asks your browser for access to a camera and displays the live video straight on your screen. The video is not recorded, uploaded or stored. Once video is running, the page also reads the resolution and frame rate the camera is reporting, so you can see whether it is delivering the quality you expect.

What the numbers mean

  • 640 x 480: basic quality, found on older or very cheap webcams.
  • 1280 x 720 (HD): the standard for most laptops. Fine for calls.
  • 1920 x 1080 (Full HD): sharper picture, common on external webcams and newer laptops.
  • Frame rate: 30 fps looks smooth. If it drops to 15 fps or lower, the room is probably too dim, because cameras slow down to collect more light.

Look better on camera

Face a window or lamp, rather than sitting with light behind you. Keep the camera at eye level, wipe the lens with a soft cloth, and check there is nothing covering it. Many problems are just a closed privacy shutter or a dirty lens.

Camera guides by app and computer

If the camera works here but not in an app, use the guide for your setup: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Windows 10 and 11 or Mac. Before any meeting it is worth checking your microphone too, with the microphone test.
