Keyboard Test
Press keys on your keyboard. Each key turns green once it registers.
Mac users: hold Fn while pressing F1–F12, or turn on “Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys” in System Settings → Keyboard. Brightness, volume and other special keys are handled by the operating system, so no website can detect them and they will stay dark.
Keys pressed: 0 · Last key: -
How to use the keyboard tester
Press each key in turn. A key that does not turn green is not being detected by your browser. Test modifier keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) on both sides too.
Key not registering?
- Clean it: dust or crumbs under a keycap are the most common cause. Use compressed air.
- Try another app: if the key works elsewhere, a browser extension or shortcut may be capturing it.
- Laptop keyboards: a Fn-lock or driver problem can disable specific keys. Update or reinstall the keyboard driver.
- Plug in an external keyboard to tell whether the problem is hardware or software.
- Some system keys (Windows key, Print Screen, volume keys) may be intercepted by the OS and cannot be detected by a web page.
How this keyboard test works
Each time you press a key, your browser reports which physical key it was. The test lights up the matching key on the on-screen keyboard and keeps it green once seen, so you can work through the whole board and spot any key that never lights up. It identifies keys by their position on the keyboard, so it works the same on QWERTY, AZERTY and other layouts. Nothing you type is stored or sent.
How to test properly
- Press every key once, including both Shift, Ctrl and Alt keys.
- Check the number row, the punctuation keys and the arrow keys, since those fail often.
- Press the Space bar at the far left, middle and right, because wear can differ along its length.
- Press Reset to start again after you clean or fix something.
Keys a website cannot see
Some keys never reach the browser. Brightness, volume, media and keyboard-backlight keys are handled by the operating system, and so are shortcuts such as the Windows key combinations. They will stay dark on every online keyboard test, so that does not mean they are broken. On a Mac, hold the Fn key while pressing F1 to F12 to test them.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't some keys light up?
Browsers cannot see certain system keys such as Fn or media keys, and the OS can swallow shortcuts like Win+key.
Does this test for ghosting?
Yes. Hold several keys at once. If a key stops registering while others are held, your keyboard may have a rollover limit.
Is anything I type recorded?
No. Key presses are shown on screen only and never stored or sent anywhere.
