Microphone Test for Windows 10 & 11
Use this free test to check that Windows can hear your microphone. If the level bar stays flat, the fixes below cover the usual Windows causes. This guide uses our free microphone test.
Press start and allow microphone access, then speak.
Fix a microphone that is not working on Windows
- Check privacy settings. Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone and Let desktop apps access your microphone (browsers are desktop apps).
- Choose the right input. Settings → System → Sound → Input. Select your mic and speak. The bar under Test your microphone should move.
- Raise the volume. In the same screen open your microphone's properties and set input volume to at least 70.
- Run the troubleshooter. Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Recording Audio.
- Turn off exclusive mode. Sound settings → More sound settings → Recording tab → Properties → Advanced. Untick Allow applications to take exclusive control.
- Update or reinstall the driver. Device Manager → Audio inputs and outputs. Right-click your mic and choose Update driver, or Uninstall device and restart.
Headset or USB microphone not listed?
Unplug it, wait five seconds, then plug it into a different USB port. For Bluetooth headsets, remove the device in Settings → Bluetooth & devices and pair it again. Many Bluetooth headsets switch to a lower-quality call mode when the mic is on, which is normal.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Windows microphone detected but silent?
The most common cause is the input volume set too low or muted in Sound settings, or another app holding exclusive control of the device.
Does this work on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. The test runs in your browser, so it works the same on both. Only the Settings menu names differ slightly.
