Speaker Test

Turn your volume to a comfortable level, then press a button.

Tap a button to play a short tone.

No sound or only one side working?

  • Check the volume and mute in your system tray or menu bar, and in the browser tab.
  • Choose the right output: Windows sound settings or Mac Sound settings may be set to the wrong device (e.g. monitor instead of headphones).
  • Re-plug the headphones firmly. A half-inserted jack often kills one side.
  • Bluetooth: disconnect and reconnect, and confirm the device is selected as the output.
  • Balance settings: check your OS audio balance slider is centred.

How this speaker test works

The page generates a clean 440 Hz tone (the musical note A) directly in your browser and pans it to the left channel, the right channel or both. Because the tone is made on your device and not streamed, the test works with no internet connection once the page has loaded.

What to listen for

  • Left button: sound should come only from the left speaker or left ear.
  • Right button: sound should come only from the right side.
  • Both: sound should be centred and equally loud on both sides.
  • Crackling, buzzing or sound that cuts out usually points to a loose plug, a damaged cable or a Bluetooth connection problem.

Tips for accurate results

Start with your volume low and raise it slowly. Close other tabs that are playing sound. If you are testing a laptop, try it once with headphones and once with the built-in speakers, so you know which part has the problem. Also make sure your computer's output device is set to the speakers or headphones you want to test, not a monitor or a Bluetooth device you are no longer using.

More audio help

Testing headphones or earbuds specifically? See the headphone test. If other people cannot hear you, the problem is the input side, so run the microphone test as well.

Frequently asked questions

Why is only one side playing?

Common causes are a loose jack, a damaged cable, or the OS balance slider being off-centre. Try a different cable or device.

Is it safe for my speakers?

The tone is quiet and short. Start with a low volume and raise it gradually.

Does this work with Bluetooth headphones?

Yes, as long as they are selected as your system's audio output.
