Zoom Microphone Test

Test your mic here first, so you know the problem is not your hardware before you join a Zoom meeting. This guide uses our free microphone test.

Press start and allow microphone access, then speak.

Mic works here but not in Zoom?

  1. Select the right mic in Zoom. Zoom → Settings → Audio → Microphone. Choose the same microphone that worked in the test above, not Same as System if that picks a different device.
  2. Use Zoom's built-in test. In Settings → Audio click Test Mic, speak, then listen to the playback.
  3. Turn off Automatically adjust volume. If your voice cuts in and out, untick it and set the slider manually.
  4. Check Zoom's permissions. Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and tick Zoom.
  5. Join with audio. Click Join Audio in the meeting. If you see a mic icon with a red slash, click it to unmute.
  6. Close other apps that grab the mic, such as Teams, Discord or OBS.

Sound better on Zoom

Keep the mic about a hand's width from your mouth, use a headset in a noisy room, and set Background noise suppression to Auto or Low in Zoom's audio settings. High suppression can clip the start of your words.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't people hear me on Zoom even though my mic works?

Zoom is probably using a different microphone, or you are muted in the meeting. Check Settings → Audio and the mic icon at the bottom left of the meeting.

Is this test connected to Zoom?

No. It only tests your microphone in the browser. Nothing is sent to Zoom or anyone else.
