Gamepad Test

Connect a controller, then press any button on it.

Controller problems explained

  • Stick drift: an axis reads above ~0.10 with the stick untouched. Clean around the stick and recalibrate. Persistent drift usually needs a replacement stick module.
  • Button not lighting up: the contact pad is worn or dirty. Clean it or replace the controller.
  • Controller not detected: press a button after connecting, since browsers only reveal controllers once used. Try another USB port or cable.
  • Works with PlayStation, Xbox, Switch Pro and most generic USB or Bluetooth controllers.

How this gamepad test works

Your browser includes a Gamepad API that reports every button and stick on a connected controller. This page reads that data many times a second and displays it. Each button number lights up while you hold it, and each stick or trigger shows a live value, so you can see exactly what the controller is sending to a game.

Reading the results

  • Buttons: numbered 0 and up. Press each one and check that the matching number lights up.
  • Axes: values run from -1.00 to 1.00. Left stick left/right and up/down are usually axes 0 and 1, and the right stick axes 2 and 3.
  • Resting position: with your hands off, the sticks should read close to 0.00. A steady reading above 0.10 means drift.

Connecting your controller

Plug it in with a data-capable USB cable, or pair it over Bluetooth, then press any button. Browsers hide a controller until it is used, which is why it may not appear straight away. Chrome and Edge support controllers best.

Specific controller help

For drift, see the stick drift test and fixes. For button numbers and connection help on PlayStation and Xbox pads, see the PS5 and Xbox controller test. Playing on a touch device instead? Try the touchscreen test.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my controller detected?

Press any button after plugging it in. Browsers hide gamepads until they are used. Also try Chrome or Edge, and a different cable.

What does the number on each axis mean?

-1.00 is fully left or up, 1.00 is fully right or down, and 0.00 is centred.

Does this work on mobile?

It works with Bluetooth controllers on browsers that support the Gamepad API.
