What causes a mouse to double-click on its own
Mouse buttons use a small micro-switch with a metal contact. After months of use the contact wears or oxidises, and a single press makes the signal flicker, which the computer reads as two clicks. It is one of the most common mouse failures, and it happens on every brand.
Things to try
- Check the Windows setting. Control Panel → Mouse → Buttons. Make sure Double-click speed is not at an extreme and ClickLock is off.
- Update or reinstall the mouse software from the maker, and reset the mouse to defaults.
- Click the button 50 to 100 times. Sometimes this wears down the oxidation and the fault disappears for a while.
- Swap the left and right button functions in settings. If the fault stays on the same physical button, it is the switch.
- Replace the switch if you can solder. Micro-switches cost a few dollars. Otherwise replace the mouse, or claim warranty.

Frequently asked questions
How fast is a double click?
A deliberate double click is usually 100 to 400 milliseconds apart. A faulty switch often produces a second click within 20 to 80 milliseconds.
Can a mouse double-click problem be fixed?
Sometimes it can be improved by cleaning or replacing the switch, but a worn switch normally keeps getting worse.
